I'd give Delaware to Maryland, Rhode Island to Conn., Merge the Dakotas, Newhampshire and VT and Maine, Montana and Idaho, give wisconsin Michigan's UP, make west virginia go back to virginia.

Five states I could do without:

    5. Tennessee
    4. Massachusetts
    3. New Jersey
    2. California
    1. Maryland

Those are problems that always existed, though. Rhode Island and Virginia were never the same size or population.

The article seems to only focus on the urban areas, too, as if the rest of the country doesn't exist, isn't important to the nation's welfare, or that no one lives there.

What's laughable about the article is the underlying assumption that there is/was actually a plan or "model" behind there being 50 (or however many) sorta-sovereign states.

With the emphasis on the sorta.

Even that ... the sorta ... just kinda happened.

True. They were originally intended to be far more sovereign than they are.

twas manifest destiny. 50 is a nice round number, which is probably why Puerto Rico is stuck with territory status

Maryland has already been merged into Massachusetts.
