I'm about to get out the check book and subscribe to a new batch of magazines for 2007.

Other than the obvious (Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, etc.), are there any real good sports/general magazines that you guys personally enjoy?

I've heard some good things about the Basketball Times, is that worth checking out at 12 issues/$24?

    Thanks!

Esquire is the best magazine on the planet. Just ask our friend Jones.

I've been getting into The Atlantic lately. Today there was a funny story by Jeff (I think) Buckley about 2008 Elections and the role Cuban Americans in south Florida will play. Might have been an excerpt to his book. Either way, funny. Good story in the back of the mag about the future of newspapers and the Internets.

If that doesn't work, try the glossy porno mags.

Ditto on Atlantic Monthly. Always has interesting articles. James Fallows has done excellent work writing about the War on Terror.

"Today I read" is how I should have prefaced my post.

Not a sports magazine, but I'm a fan of Harpers (not Harpers Bizarre). Always interesting stories and interesting analysis.

HIGHLY recommend the New Yorker. It's the best writing on the planet, and you'll learn lots. This week has a GREAT article on the Rumsfeld tenure. Two weeks ago i learned a lot about Lagos, Nigeria. It's a fascinating stuff. Without getting too sappy, the Lagos article prompted me to call my father and tell him how proud/happy i was that he got to this country and worked his ass off to give our family a good life (not that I'm from Lagos). Plus, it gives you stuff to talk to others about instead of sports when out with friends.

I subscribe to a bunch, but the only ones I really look forward to are Esquire, The Week, and Blender.

And I've mentioned it here repeatedly, but I very highly recommend buying magazine subscriptions on eBay.

For fellow Jews in the house, Heeb is funny while being informative.

I would subscribe to something called Harpers Bizarre.

This month: Where Are They Now visits Alvin Harper.

Next month: A nostalgic look back at Barbara Eden, star of TV's "Harper Valley PTA."
