Sir Salman Rushdie celebrates his 60th birthday today in familiar circumstances: he is once again the subject of death threats across the Islamic world.

Eighteen years after the Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling on Muslims to kill him, a government minister in Pakistan said yesterday that Rushdie’s recent knighthood justified suicide bombing.

Seriously, though, there was a government official of a so-called U.S. ally in the war on terror basically condoning terrorism because Britain is knighting an author. This is a legitimately troubling story, even if Boom was the one to bring it up. Such intolerance and disdain for free speech are not exactly isolated incidents within Islam (the cartoon controversy made that clear). It doesn't mean all Muslims feel the same, but let's not pretend that it's only a few crazies on the fringe.
