'Muscular body image leads boys into gym, obsession'

The answer has to be that there are less people in the middle, right?

I wonder if this is related to growing income inequality.

Obesity would seem to tend to be more of a problem for low-income people, right?

Body image obsession would seem to tend to be more of a problem for high-income people, right?

Hence ...

 

Also has to do with the media gravitating toward extremes for the better story. Plenty of people in the middle, but who wants to read about them?

We know for a fact that obesity rates have grown.

But the NYT story has no indication whether body image obsession has grown. It has some stats, but nothing to compare them to.

Doesn't seem like it would have been that hard to dig them up.

 

I would be curious what percentage of people are happy with their weight, one way or the other... I'd be surprised if the number would be much higher thatn 10-15 percent.
