Career Opportunities: Multi-Platform Sports Journalist, High School Beat (92963)

The York Daily Record/Sunday News is not a newspaper. A newspaper is merely one platform our newsroom uses to serve our communities. As is an iPad, a blog, a smartphone and the Web. You will work fluidly on all these platforms and more.

This journalist provides comprehensive coverage, both digital and print, of high school sports in York County and the surrounding region.

    Specific responsibilities

    • As directed, write game stories, breaking news, hard news, analysis (through columns), trend and issue stories, quality features and enterprise for GameTimePA.com and ydr.com.
    • Be proactive to post stories to the web and blogs.
    • Post daily about high school and local sports on all social media platforms that make sense, including, but not limited to, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. Post more aggressively during games and when there is breaking news..
    • Make sure that our social networking isn’t a one-way street. Reporter should be crowd-sourcing, answering questions, interacting with readers and offering transparency about our coverage.
    • Have full ownership of marketing and cross-promotion of his or her high school sports content across all GameTimePA and Daily Record platforms. Guide social media and breaking news desks on best ways to promote your work.
    • Own stories from beginning to end: Write SEO-friendly headlines, add links and rich media to stories, track statistics in Omniture.
    • As appropriate, work with the visual department early in story development to plan for art, graphics and online presentation.
    • Work to aggressively grow social media numbers each month to increase reach and influence.
    • Aggressively tackle and master new digital technologies as they develop, to keep us ahead of the curve and to enhance and expand the relationship with readers.
    • Offer analysis and perspective by appearing on the weekly GameDay with GameTimePA radio show and in videos, such as GameTimePA TV. Shoot, edit and post at least 3-4 videos per week.
    • Host and produce podcasts and moderate live chat sessions, as appropriate and as assigned.
    • Be a mobile journalist. Work and file from the field.
    • Participate in community-based events (NewsVroom, shadowing, etc.)
    • Serve as general-assignment reporter, as needed, especially during the summer.
    • Suggest newsworthy events that could be staffed by correspondents to augment coverage.
    • Work with Daily Record sports editor to set weekly assignment schedules.
    • Minimum of five published stories per week, year round.
    • Complete at least three major enterprise packages throughout the year
    • Help with any needed copy desk duties, as assigned, throughout the year
    • Serves as a community watchdog through multimedia reporting.
