MTV has done a better job in recent years of putting together shows that can actually influence young lives positively. 16 and Pregnant makes me think twice about having sex, and I'm 30. Life of Jenks preaches empathy. The Buried Life preaches reaching out and helping others.

    Then there's Jersey Shore...

I watched the first 10 minutes of Skins the other night. It was basically a smooth-talking 17-year old who was trying to convince girls to have sex with his virgin friend. He finally found one, but the chick demanded that the virgin go get her drugs first. That's the rated PG version.

I'm a pretty liberal guy and was pretty crazy in high school, and I thought it was a completely inappropriate representation of teenage life.

  3. Come to think of it, how old was Jennifer Jason Leigh when she filmed that famously (or infamously, depending on your point of view) brief sex scene in "Fast Times At Ridgemont High"? She had to be of age, though she looked considerably younger.

I think MTV already knows the answer and is just trying to hype the show.

Except the target audience doesn't see it that way — that age group sees it as "she's on TV."

I'll admit, I've been watching 16 and Pregnant. While there are some aspects that look MTVed up (The guys mostly seem disinterested in being dads; none of the girls' friends has an ounce of fat on them etc.), I still find it a pretty compelling show.

Jessica Bennett is not a moron.

I agree with Shaggy; there's some decent stuff in addition to the junk. I think "16 and Pregnant" should be required viewing for anyone 13 and older. They recently did a one-show follow-up on abortion, which was extremely well done and an honest look at the issue.

Except there's been reports that those shows are leading some teens to try and get pregnant so they can get on TV. Of course, being a pregnant teen on MTV pays way more than being a journalist, so maybe it's a good career move.

Also, I've never watched Teen Mom or Teen Mom 2. Never.
