    I was thinking about this some more - and not being one with an expansive background in international film - I wonder if the "underdog" rag-tag group of misfits that come together to win is unique to the US. Think of Bad News Bears, The Replacements and the like, cast-offs, diverse backgrounds getting a second chance and battling against established power teams, coming together and triumphing - is it not analagous to the U.S.?
    Westerns - the lone guy standing up to the bully - "High Noon" etc.
