Movies that left a lasting impression on you

The Deer Hunter. Roommate and I, both having missed Viet Nam by just a few years and recently out of undergrad, walked out of the theater speechless and stayed that way for most of the drive home. So powerful and harrowing.

 

Kind of an odd question - but does anyone else feel that movies made in the last few years won't be as "enduring" as movies from 10 or more years ago. Black Panther will endure, but other than that - these films seem pretty run of the mill. I don't expect a Titanic or Goodfellas every year - but Hollywood seems to no longer be able to differentiate between a well-made film and a good movie.
Any of the movies up in 2010 would have beaten Green Book.

Earthquake - the surround sound shook me

 

Haven’t seen “Green Book,” so can’t speak to that, but I’d say “A Star is Born,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Hell or High Water,” “Bridge of Spies,” “Nightcrawler” and “Fences” are all movies from the past three years that punch in that weight class. There’s also crowd-pleasers like “Hidden Figures” that are going to be the next “Shawshank Redemption” after a decade on streaming platforms and cable.

I get what you’re saying, though. It feels like fewer original must-see movies are coming out. Probably a side effect of superhero and reamke fatigue. For every “Black Panther,” you get two (at best) quippy Robert Downey Jr. vehicles and a remake of a so-so movie from 2000 that you didn’t really miss.

 

Caddyshack — I can’t use a ball washer without thinking of Mrs. Crane.

- Scream (was 14, finally got into the R-rated movie on the third try — but I got to see The Sixth Man twice for failing!).

Scream is a really good one. Upended the lagging horror film industry.
There's Something About Mary remains one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. The Farrellys at their finest.
Memento was a mindfuck. Loved it.
Children of Men is worth seeing for the long take attack in the car alone, but it's it's such a criminally underrated film overall. It was so friggin good. I can't say it should have beaten "Pan's Labryinth" for Cinematography at the Oscars, but it probably would have won in most other years.

 

Interested in your take on Little Miss Sunshine.

 

I thought it was an amusing “slice of life” movie, which I’m a sucker for (see many entries on my list). Saw it twice in theater, even. I was early 20s, though, and probably haven’t watched it in 10+ years. Maybe I’d view it differently now.
