He wasn't NL MVP, NLCS MVP or WS MVP.

    No way.

Needs his sport to become relevant again.

SI already threw that bone to the guy in the sport no one gives a shit about... to Armstrong.

    Agreed.

Ali is on a far higher cosmic pay grade than the rest of this list.

I say if not Federer, do something creative. Other than Rog, there wasn't a single athlete who transcended their sport this year so why not go an alternative route? Why not Mutumbo for his work in Africa and for still playing at 42 or in all liklihood 50. Why not the reporters who scooped BALCO? Why not Matsuzaka for his work in the WBC and for commanding 51 mill from the Red Sox? Why not Big Ben for winning the SB so young, then going through his tumultous year?
D-Wade is a great player, but just an uninspiring choice. A choice that will sell magazines, though, which is obviously why they don't chose Federer.

Also...shouldn't the Sportsman of the Year have been able to lead Team USA to gold at worlds?

Wow. He won a NBA Finals series all by himself. What a great sportsman.

He doesn't even transcend the NBA let alone the sports world. He's just another very good player SI decided to put on the cover.
