Most inappropriate questions ever asked at a press conference

Mike North once asked Pat Riley if he would shave his head if it meant his team, then the Heat, would beat the Bulls in the playoffs. North was escorted out of the media room.

That's a bad question, but it's not one worthy of being removed from the media room. I've only seen a couple reporters removed from press conferences and it was usually as a pre-emptive strike. Even then, the reporter usually left on his own after being told that said coach would not come out if they were in the room.

Not sure if this counts as inappropriate or just plain cringeworthy, but during the Yankees-Mariners ALCS in 2000, when the song was all the rage, a colleague of mine (those of you who know who I am can probably figure out who I'm talking about) asked both Lou Piniella and Joe Torre, with a straight face: "Who let the dogs out?"

Torre ignored the question. Piniella, remarkably, answered, "I guess the Yankees did."

I love when Lou laughs at his own jokes.

He should have been removed because he was Mike North.

The other category that has barely been touched upon here (other than the Doug Williams deal) is the questions that players are asked at Super Bowl media day.

I remember right after Ichiro's rookie season in the US, some foreign reporters were going around and asking football players at the Super Bowl media day what they thought of Ichiro.

Wasn't it Meredith Viera who asked Mike Piazza on camera which Mets player had the "biggest wood"

NCAA Super Regional Baseball post-game presser where best hitter guy hits a 2-run walk-off home run to beat team B and advance to the College World Series -- his second HR of the night.

First question of PC for Team B coach:

Q: "Coach, Why did you decide to pitch to best hitter guy; why didn't intentionally walk him?"

A: "Well, that was a dumb move on my part. I thought blah blah blah blah blah..." (a good 60-90 second answer follows even though it's obvious the coach is still reeling from the loss.)

Q2: "Coach, if you can just talk about the decision not to pitch around best hitter guy there in the bottom of the 9th with a base open."

This was followed by a big GASP in the room... Every head in the PC turned to give a "What the Fuck!" look to the guy (who was in the room but still setting up his equipment when the first question was asked.) Then back to the coach to see if he was gonna have a stroke. Coach took a deep breath and then answered the question again just as thoroughly as he had done the first time.

Have I mentioned I love covering college baseball?

I tell this story a lot so it might out me, but it's too funny.

At the Big 12 women's basketball tournament a few years back, Baylor coach Kim Mulkey was wearing this silver sequined suit that was a cross between Ru Paul and Vanna White. It was startling how one-of-a-kind this outfit was.

After Baylor won the first-round game, a reporter asked (tongue-in-cheek), "Kim, some would say that outfit is more of a semifinal or finals type of attire. Can you explain your thought process in bringing it out in the first round?"

Everyone about died laughing except for Mulkey, who said "What in the hell does that have to do with basketball?"

That could also be the greatest question ever asked, Shaggy.

College football division - team had like 19 rushing yards:

Reporter: "Coach, were you having trouble getting the running game going out there tonight?"

OC: "Well we uh, uh . . . you were at the game, right son?"

When T.O. was suspended by the Eagles, was the question to Drew Rosenhaus "What have you done for your client besides get him suspended?" considered inappropriate or hilarious?

It was a perfectly legitimate question.

    It was also hilarious.
