They'll have a hard time proving that Osborne is lying. If it was signed when the kid was a HS sophomore, he'd probably gotten a recruiting letter from NU, but so had every decent player in the country. Even if he went to a camp at NU it still doesn't prove they knew who he was.

From Martinez's bio on Nebraska U's athletic web site:

"Martinez spent only one season at Centennial High School. As a junior, he quarterbacked San Bernadino Cajon High School and accounted for about 1,500 yards of total offense. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at Norco High, where he primarily played in the secondary. Martinez only visited Nebraska."

All it would take is a Google search by a coach to see that the kid was a football player, and a pretty good one at that. In other words, Osborne is full of shit about not knowing he was a football player. Kid had 1,500 yards of total offense as a junior, then he transfers to another school. In between that, the dad signs the deal with Nebraska.

And the kid only visited Nebraska.

BTW, the LATimes' story had much more detail before the AP hacked it up.

    • Nebraska deal kicked off the other college deals.
    • Dad days he was in discussions with Neb when kid was a HS freshman.
    • No more info on whether the rate is in the ballpark of the norm, but dad says he hasn't made much money on it (less than $500 since signing the deal three years ago).
    • OTOH, the kid was recruited by plenty of big schools, but only made one recruiting trip. To Nebraska.

Ed Manning and Larry Brown don't see a problem with this.
