Any word on Wisconsin? Whenever these things happen, there always seem to be quite a few from Wisconsin and Louisiana, for obvious reasons.

62 at the Indy Star, including 26 in the newsroom. That's 15 percent of the newsroom staff.

Indy lost 3 sports copy editors, including the chief. That's on top of 2 recent sports reporter departures who won't be replaced (one zone guy for which they flew in two candidates, and one downtown dude guy who just gave notice). Good thing they only have 2 pro teams, 500, Super Bowl, NCAA tournaments, Big Ten championships, etc., etc.

Same here. That's the word on the streets and on the local sports show not too long ago.

And it's typical of how they let people go at the Register: escort you out quickly and swiftly. They did that to cartoonist Brian Duffy. The brass wouldn't send him all of his work that he couldn't take with him when he was escorted out of the building, from what was told during the last layoff.

I'm not in the paper business, with that said, there are a good number of people I have become friends with at the Register and have the upmost respect for. Everytime I hear that Gannett is doing something, I cringe like hell.

    Disheartening.

At what point do we start seeing newsroom shootings?

It's reached the point that the Scripps-closing-the-Rocky-on-short-notice approach is probably time to be used.

A name on Ruth's list is another sports zone reporter.

I'm hearing the same about the press. I hear two in Shreveport in IT and custom publishing, none in the news room, but they will start printing the News-Star, meaning massive layoffs in Monroe's print production plant. Lafayette was spared layoffs. Haven't heard about Alexandria or Opelousas.

FYI: Monroe still didn't have a sports editor as of a few weeks ago. Hearing no layoffs in Opelousas as well as Lafayette. For now. That's an important phrase to remember. For now.

Gannett will make cuts again. History proves it. My thoughts and prayers are with those let go today. It's a freaking joke that executives continue to receive sizable bonuses while the company continues to circle the drain due in part to their poor leadership.

I knew one of the Star guys well, he worked for a time with me in the paper's custom publications department (which I always explained to people as "the stuff you throw out of your Sunday paper"). He left the gig for a newsside job and developed into a darned good reporter. Now I wonder if he'd still be employed if he stayed in the old department, which the Star looked favorably upon as a moneymaker. Ugh.

My condolences to anyone here who may have been a victim. What a shitty industry we're in. It makes me cringe and want to almost cry every time I read something like this, and it seems like its almost everyday. Good luck to everyone.
