Email sent out to employees. Severance packages being offered.

Yet, they're planning on running Sunday sections during the Olympics.

The good news is that, for now, no one is actually being laid off. Taking a package will be voluntary.

The bad news, according to the publisher, is "voluntary severance alone is unlikely to produce a large enough response to avoid layoffs."

At least they were classy enough to wait until after the holidays, unlike PKP at Quebecor.

though I'd rather know before I spent money on gifts than after

let's face it, there's no good time to lay people off.

You could argue its worse in May or June, because many companies don't really hire in the summer months with so decision-makers many on vacation

Canada -- in general -- is just as F'd as America is economically. At least there have been tremendous economic gains made in Saskatchewan/Alberta due to minerals/gases/petroleum/etc.

It's weird to think of Saskatchewan and Newfoundland as "have" provinces and Ontario as a "have-not" province, but that's life in Canada as it stands right now. :-\

Man, that stinks. Just wonder how long this "cycle" will be.
