Jeter is a monument guy for sure. Numbers aside, I don't know if there is one guy playing today more identified with his team than Jeter. He's like Ernie Banks, Stan Musial, and Cal Ripken.

Not if he hits #763 in pinstripes.

    Not a career Yankee.

Clemens and Boggs won't be out there.

"Number going up on the wall" means that they retired the guy's number. It's not the booby prize. No one whose number is retired, doesn't have a plaque or a monument or one of each. There are players with plaques (Lefty Gomez, Red Ruffing, Allie Reynolds), whose numbers aren't retired.

    I never knew that.

Why do they have plaques and not have their numbers retired?

I don't know the answer. But in the case of Ruffing, he wore #15. 15 is retired, but it is for Thurman Munson. It's not co-retired, like 8 is for Bill Dickey and Yogi Berra.

ARod isn't even the best player of his era. Albert Pujols, please step forward to receive that honor.

Jeter gets monument. Rivera gets plaque. Pettitte and Posada get numbers retired soon after they're done. Williams and O'Neill get numbers retired when Yanks have poor season to draw a big gate.

If monument is the supreme level, Jeter, Riviera and Stienbrenner are there, perhaps Torre too. Pettitte will have his number retired. He's the winningest all time pitcher in the post season. Had he not buzzed off to Houston for three years and stayed with the Yankees, he'd be in Monument Park eventually too.
