Too bad this hire doesn't get to cover Permian football.

I love how the salary is listed as "negotiable." That just screams "we're going to pay you even less than what most people think is rock bottom for this job."
I'm all for doing as much as you can for your job, but when will the higher-ups realize adding even more duties on a person and paying pittance (if that) more often results in crappy product.

Didn't realize this position already exists (at Gannett, deskslave points out). Still, not something you see advertised every day. PE has always has a good rep. I doubt they'd pay NYTimes money, but my guess is a lot better than Lean Dean (I know, that's saying a lot...). If done right, it could be a fun gig.

Journalism the way we know it? Probably not.
    The future? Perhaps.
In case anyone missed Paul Oberjuerge chillingly insightful top 10 tips on keeping your print job, topping the list is ``1. Embrace the web. It’s going to be extra work, and you’re going to be on your own 24-hour news/opinion cycle. But that’s how it is; you can rest up when you’re dead.''

    Seems to fit.

No. 7 is the only one that should be taken word-for-word as serious. I've been in those situations before where if you're not the ME's hire, nothing you do will ever be right or good enough.
