Just watched the bottom of the ninth. Al Michaels just as good then as he is today.

I like the pajama pants better now. Styles change.

The part that always stuck with me about that inning wasn't the home run. It was the two-out walk to Mike Davis to give Gibson a chance. Davis had been terrible that season and Eckersley's control was outstanding.

    Here's something even cooler:

Thanks to the Hall of Fame, the Scout of the Year Foundation and SABR, you can now view the original scouting report that Dodgers advance scout Mel Didier delivered on Dennis Eckersley online at http://scouts.baseballhall.org.

*Likes to "backdoor" slider to LH hitters on 3-2 count.

Gibson said when he got to 3-2 on Eck, he called timeout, stepped out of the box and thought about that line in the report ... and the rest is history.

I've heard Gibson tell that story before, but to have the actual report -- freakin' cool.

The scouting report on Eck in '73 is also fun to read:

One guy said, "Didn't impress in two games we saw him. Cannot help."

Another scout: "Could be a sleeper".

Third scout: "He could help on AA level".

    http://scouts.baseballhall.org/report?reportid=06905&playerid=eckerde01

Whoda thunk this pitcher would end up in the Hall of Fame?

Read that again. The "cannot help" and "could be a sleeper" comments were about different guys.

Aw, shit, you're right. Still funny though that the one scout did think he "could" help at the AA level.
