MLB 2022: The Long and Winding Thread

The Nats' offense doesn't report to spring training for another six weeks.

1-8 so far this Spring, having scored four or more runs twice.

 

Wonder what Michael Conforto is asking for that he’s still unsigned a week out. He definitely picked a bad time to have a down year. Nice hitter. Solid defender. Never heard of any clubhouse issues.

 

A big part of that is the draft pick a team would lose if they sign him.

 

Oh, right. Thanks. Forgot he was a QO guy.

 

I heard he's going to retire after this season and he wants to go into the Hall of Fame with Molina, who also is retiring. The problem is, Pujols is a surefire first ballot guy and Molina is not.

 

Unfortunately I think people are going to underestimate the support Molina will get. And if they are the only two big newcomer names on the ballot, the narrative to vote for both of them to go in together will be very strong.

 

Kershaw and Verlander are probably the only other big name who could potentially retire after this season and be on the ballot. And Miggy if the Tigers buy him out. How much juice will Wainwright get if he retires too?

 

He is going to have little juice, especially if he doesn't reach 200 wins and then calls it quits.

There has to be no chance Cabrera agrees to a buyout -- why would you give up any portion of a guaranteed $32 million when no one else is going to sign you if you are a free agent?

Verlander might be the wild card. If he comes back and has lost it, I could see him walking away. But he has a $25 mil player option -- do you just walk away from that?

Kershaw seems to be at the point where he might just go year to year.

But yes, if Kershaw, Verlander and Pujols all retired this year -- that is the class.
