Assuming you mean the 10-year/$252M deal he signed with Texas in 2000, he was four years younger than Machado is now, and it was so prohibitively expensive, the Rangers traded him to the Yankees for Sorian0 just three years later. Also, A-Rod opted out of that contract after seven seasons, and I think it's fair to say that the new 10-year deal he signed with the Yankees ended fairly disastrously.

But other than that, great point.

He didn't come close to outplaying the contract he signed with the Yankees.

The contract he signed with the Rangers (which he played under into NYC until 2007) may be the best contract that has ever been signed in the free agent era.

The first Bonds K in 1993 I’m positive he outplayed it. He was MVP first yr alone.

And in those seven years, he led the lead in home runs five times and won three MVPs and was a runner-up in another season. His worst season in that stretch was .286/.375 / .512 with 36 homers and 106 RBI.

You give a guy a moster contract, he gave you the production

What is this four year age difference? The first year of A-Rod's deal was his age 25 season. The first year of this year will be Machado's age 26 season

Was just coming here to point that out. He actually turned 26 that July.

Long-term, big-money free agent deals that worked out:

    Reggie Jackson with the Yankees
    Pete Rose with the Phillies
    Nolan Ryan with the Astros
    Dave Winfield with the Yankees
    Nolan Ryan with the Rangers
    Barry Bonds with the Giants
    Greg Maddux with the Braves
    Rafael Palmeiro with the Orioles
Roger Clemens with the Blue Jays
    Randy Johnson with the Diamondbacks
    Rafael Palmeiro with the Rangers
Manny Ramirez with the Red Sox
Johnny Damon with the Red Sox
    Mike Mussina with the Yankees
    Alex Rodriguez with the Rangers
    Vlad Guerrero with the Angels
    Carlos Beltran with the Mets
    Adrian Beltre with the Rangers
Max Scherzer with the Nationals (so far)

    Any I'm forgetting?

Given the hostory free agency over the last 40 years, that’s an incredibly short list.

    Jacoby Ellsbury balances that out

I would say Andre Dawson with the Cubs is borderline.
