While this may seem discouraging to some, there is absolutely no need for a sports media columnist at any newspaper any more. It was a fluff job to begin with. I'm disappointed for Barry but trying to demean the raises of management in this way is short-sighted and shallow. I'm not one to defend the suits much, but sometimes it's just not the fuckin suits' fault.

The mob/herd mentality around here sometimes is quite disappointing for a place of journalists, who are generally supposed to be intuitive, creative, independent thinkers.

I was ready to blast the suits again until I read this. Good point Doc.

To be fair, it looks like he has written at least one takeout piece every month and done other non-media stories. So it's not like he was pigeon-holed into one topic that is now expendable. I assume he will end up on the Rick Gosselin plan of being a "special contributor"

A lot of intuitive, creative, independent thinking journalists are sitting at the unemployment office. Hard to feel anything for the suits.
