They sure as hell paid Mariucci. In fact, I think they just stopped paying him.

The tradition claim's motheaten. It's been a long, long time since Bobby Layne.

    1957.

even green bay in its very, very down years between lombardi and holmgren had slivers of hope. and it wasn't as long of a down period.

Could be time for another Millen Man March.

With WCF Jr. leading the way, proudly wearing a "FIRE MILLEN" shirt.

In one fell swoop, the image of the Fords as oblivious, apathetic, utterly out-of-touch owners could be largely dispelled. Especially if WCF Sr. met the march at the gates of Ford Field and announced, "I've seen the light. Matt Millen is terminated, as of this moment."

Of course, it wouldn't be a miracle cure for the franchise -- they have to hire someone who knows what he's doing, basically give him a blank checkbook, and get the hell out of the way -- but it's the first step, and it simply must be taken for the franchise to ever become competitive, much less a contender.

Everything else which must be done -- shitcanning the entire current nepotistic/incestuous/incompetent coaching staff, gutting the roster, shipping out probably 45 of the 53 current players, clearing out all the Tampa Bay retreads and washouts, hiring a new staff and starting to rebuild the roster -- flows from that.

As long as Millen remains, the franchise is hopeless. Utterly doomed. They might get marginally better one year, then backslide the next, but "near-mediocrity" (as in last season's 7-9) is the ceiling as long as Millen remains.

Yep even Don Majokowski (?) could beat the Lions.

Then again Eric Hipple/Eric Kramer and Barry Sanders even won a playoff game and got to the NFC Championship Game. So maybe the dry period just seems longer.

they had no shot, none of beating the skins. sacrificial lambs in a year where the nfc, except for the east, was weak.

Obviously a terrible joke because one, its played, and two, when the team was in the rich northern Suburbs they didn't even have a GM.

    Boooo!

No, the Lions will just fire RM and let Millen choose yet another head coach to lead his proud collection of receivers.

FixOrRepairDaily. I saw that Willie Jr. dumped $1 million of his Ford stock recently so maybe he's in the mood to get rid of things that aren't giving him a good return?

Catch a whiff of that? It's the Dwarf, piling on...
He says he won't call for his firing because it's not his place, but instead will wait until he's gone before he stabs him in the back...

I have never called for a man to be fired in this column, and I won’t start now. Sports figures have dignity and families, too, and if they’re gonna get the ax, they should hear it from a boss, not me.
