Uh, you are aware that Iran-contra began as an attempt by the Reagan administration to free seven US hostages taken by Hezbollah, right? All we had to do to get them back was to sell surface-to-air and anti-tank missiles to Iran.

I'm surprised Reagan didn't just look at them sternly and make his magic happen.

 

Nah, Iran-Contra was the payoff for the October Surprise deal negotiated in summer 1980 by Team Reagan to keep the Tehran hostages in captivity until Carter was out of office in January 81. The hostages got another 200 days in captivity and Reagan got the White House.

 

Reagan won the Cold War.
