Wise didn't include Matt Barnes' explanation, which Phil Taylor discussed in last week's SI. Barnes said "-a" at the end is between friends and affectionate, while "-er" at the end is the historically hateful version.

Damned if that explanation didn't make some sense.

Defending use of a historically offensive word that even the profanity prone don't use < Laughing at attempts to designate and enforce who can and cannot say a particular word.

I adhere to the content of character stuff over skin color, as instructed way back when. So I see people who use the N-word pretty much the same, regardless of their race.

Of course, some dialects almost always pronounce "er" endings as "a" --- for any word --- whereas New Englanders do the opposite --- pronounce "a" endings as "er". That's where the "explanation" falls apart to me.

"mothafucka" sure isn't affectionate --- and I've heard it far too often.

How is something OK for one person (of a certain race) and not OK for some other person (of a different race)? I don't get that part. If blacks, for example, don't think the word should be used, then perhaps they should lead by example (not that all blacks use it, by any stretch).
