    The best part of this poll - it means absolutely nothing and UCLA and Arizona don't have to worry about being unranked at the start because they'll have a chance to play their way into the national championship game.

    To answer the original question, the furthest back I could find a preseason poll online was 1998 and it hasn't happened yet.

    Agree on all counts. While I don't doubt voters counted the returning starters as their primary basis of voting - I don't think you had voters looking at schedules to see where, or if, teams will be playing tough games.

    I used to be a voter in both the football and basketball polls and always hated the preseason poll - particularly the predictable "You are an asshole" letters from the team you didn't rank.

    All you do is look at the rosters and take a look to see who is coming back and the team with the most in each conference gets ranked.
