Cell phones pass photo of nude middle-schooler; parents wary of information-age dangers

HAMILTON — A Reynolds Middle School girl who sent nude pictures of herself to a boyfriend via cell phone is now the talk of classmates and could potentially become an electronic pin-up for voyeurs the world over.

That’s the disturbing truth of today’s technology — your tiny cell phone can become a camera that can in turn spread mischievous photos throughout a teen clique in the wink of an eye, an entire school campus in another wink, and with benefit of a memory card, can wind up on the World Wide Web.

A police officer last night warned a small collection of parents at Reynolds not to let their children have cell phones with picture-taking capability.

Parents yesterday said Reynolds officials confiscated student phones in an attempt to limit transmission of the naked pictures of the girl.

The girl’s boyfriend, also a student at Reynolds, reportedly forwarded the photo — showing full frontal nudity — to an undisclosed number of friends.

School officials yesterday refused to discuss or even acknowledge parents’ concerns about the spread of the sexually explicit photo among their charges.

“All I can tell you is incidents (like this) happen all over the world,” said Reynolds Principal Joseph Slavin III.

School officials hastened to point out that the lecture on child Internet safety delivered last night in the school auditorium was a preplanned event and had nothing to do with the sex-charged photos. A scattering of parents attended.

While touching on cell phone abuse during a Powerpoint presentation, lecturer John Moyer, a community policing officer for Cherry Hill police, covered a range of Internet dangers that can snare kids and teens.

But after the lecture, parents who had heard reports of the Reynolds photo fiasco specifically pressed for answers about how to keep kids from getting into trouble with cell phones.

“There’s no reason for your kid to have a camera on their phone,” Moyer said.

He acknowledged that cases of juveniles using cell phone cameras to embarrass other juveniles with compromising shots have occurred in his jurisdiction.

Although such mean mischief is becoming more common, he said, police are prepared to take action against those who knowingly promulgate X-rated materials.

The Reynolds incident resembles a recent case at Allentown (Pa.) Parkland High School, where in January school officials attempted to stop the spread of pornographic video and photos of two high school girls.

One girl transmitted photos of her breasts while a second girl engaged in a sex act with an unidentified boy.

Allentown District Attorney James B. Martin threatened students with possession of child pornography if they refused to delete the images from their cell phones.

I thought the comment by the DA was rather interesting. Wonder if there would be any effort to go after any students who have that photo on their phone.

Right, because the reason that a girl would send a nude pic of herself on a cell phone is just because she has a cell phone that can take nude pics.

I'm convinced that the only real purpose camera phones serve is to increase the realism of phone sex. I'm just not sure what the purpose of a camera with such crappy resolution would have otherwise.

Not sure what cell phone you are using, or which one these kids were using, but the resolution on mine is pretty awesome. And my mom's has such good resolution, she's practically built an entire photo album of Little Man playing T-ball this season using her cell phone.
