    The Detroit Free Press is seeking an energetic and hard-working reporter to cover Michigan State University athletics by producing high-value content.



    This is a prominent sports beat, focusing on the Spartans’ nationally ranked football and men’s basketball programs. You will play a vital role within a dynamic sports news-gathering operation in America’s greatest sports town. We are looking for someone who is digital-savvy, raring to make our coverage better and who wants to be part of a winning team, dedicated to producing sports content with impact, excitement and information. The goal is to engage loyal followers more often and more deeply, while also building the overall audience through breaking news, insightful columns, engaging features, game coverage and enterprise stories that provide context and analysis.



    Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's in Communication, Journalism, or equivalent experience and education
    • Previous reporting experience
    • Previous experience developing following around personal journalism through use of social media
    • Proficiency on social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Periscope and Snapchat
    • Experience with shooting and editing photos and video on an iPhone and multimedia tasks
    • Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities
    • Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing industry
    • Knows how to use time efficiently in a 24-hour newsroom
    • Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment
    • Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers’ time and money.
    • Self-motivation and self-direction.
    • Applies innovative, creative thinking to support Free Press goals.
    • Writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
    • Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.
