+6 through how many? Four, I hope.
Hate to sound like an ass and wish ill upon a kid but those who say there are out of control parents burning out a teen seem to be exactly right here.
Starman, your idea sounds excellent. Please give Michelle a call.

And Capriati didn't peak as a professional and didn't win any of her Grand Slam titles until AFTER that episode.

Funny how everyone always forgets that.

    Capriati's low point wasn't her apocalypse . . . and neither is Wie's.

How sporting is it to withdraw in the middle of rounds in two tournaments?

Based on her time on the tour(s) thus far, I don't think Wie's name is ever going to be associated with "sporting".

    Ouch.

    I know 17 is the new 25, but ... she's just 17 ...

Well aware, thanks. That's why I said I hate to wish ill on a kid. I blame the parents. I agree with Starman's idea for a solution.

    Poooor bay-beeee!

I wonder if she would have withdrawn if she had been near the lead.

I once covered an athlete who was at top of his class in college, but every time something went against him he started to limp, then stop play because of this "injury." It never, ever bothered him when he was winning. I think this maneuver shall have to be renamed pulling a "Wie."

And I say she's hitting practice shots by Monday morning.

    Yeah, I saw sparks fly
From the corner of my eye
    And when I turned (whoo)
It was love at first sight
    I said please excuse me
I didn't catch your name (whoa)
    It'd be a shame
    Not to see you again

    And just when I thought
She was coming to my door
    She whispered sweet
And brought me to the floor
    She said

    Chorus:
    I'm only seventeen (seventeen)
I'll show you love like you've never seen
    She's only seventeen (seventeen)
    Daddy says she's too young
But she's old enough for me

    Come to my place
We can talk it over (oh)
Everything going down in your head
    She said take it easy
    I need some time
    Time to work it out
    To make you mine

    And just when I thought
She was coming to my door
    She whispered sweet
And brought me to the floor
    She said,

    Chorus:
    I'm only seventeen (seventeen)
    You ain't seen love
    Ain't seen nothing like me
    She's only seventeen
    Seventeen........yeah!!!!

    Solo

    Such a bad girl
Loves to work me over time
    Feels good (ha)
    Dancin' close to the borderline
    She's a magic mountain
    She's a leather glove (oh)
    She's my soul
    It must be love

    Chorus:
    She's only seventeen (seventeen)
The girl she gives me love like I've never seen
    She's only seventeen (seventeen)
    Daddy says she's too young
But she's old enough for me
    Seventeen!!
    She's everything I need (seventeen)
    Daddy says she's too young
    But she's old enough
    Old enough for me
    Yeah! Yeah!!

From the AP story on Wie's withdrawal, her comments when asked what she would do next:

“As of right now, I don’t know,” Wie said, wearing an ice bag on her left wrist, the defiant tone in her voice reduced to resignation. “I’m definitely going to think about all the options. I want to lay off again, but we’ll have to see.”

    Jennifer Capriati:
Age 14: Reached the semifinals of the 1990 French Open.
Age 15: Became the youngest-ever women's semifinalist at Wimbledon
Age 16: Won the Olympic gold medal by beating Steffi Graf in Barcelona, Spain.

All of the above was BEFORE the meltdown. As you pointed out, no Grand Slam titles before the meltdown. At the same time, Capriati wasn't struggling like Wie is, either. Those three accomplishments by Capriati trump anything Wie has done.

And your point is . . . what?

That Capriati at age 16 had accomplished more than Wie? Well, duh.

    That wasn't the argument, however.

The argument was whether Wie was headed for some "Capriati-like" meltdown that would, in the words of many, "ruin" her career.

    I only pointed out that a Capriati-like meltdown didn't ruin Capriati's career.
