This guy says the Northwest Indiana cornfield was better than a manure pile.

Sad. I can comprehend a temporary fit of anger. I can't get my mind around what allows parents to do something like this over an extended period of time without a voice in their heads telling them that this just isn't right.

Man, is Gary, IN a mess.

One in three homeowners does not pay their property taxes. And those that do, pay a high tax for little services:

Meanwhile, the City is starved for cash and has laid off 400 city workers:

If you think Gary was in a death spiral before, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Gary, like a lot of decaying industrial cities, was hit hard by the real estate boom of the 2000s, in that people who previously did not have the ability to leave, did so. Nearby Merrillville, in particular, saw a huge bump in its black population as middle-class African-Americans moved out. Now, a combination of state property tax caps and a need to convert from cash-based accounting (which cities generally don't do) means that in a year or two Gary's property tax revenue will be cut in half.

You know things are bad when you're profiled in Life After People as a present-day example:

Still, I take no joy in any of this, or find fault with people who live in Gary. The town was built out of whole cloth because of U.S. Steel, and began dying with the American steel industry. I guess there are some things Gary could have done so things wouldn't suck so hard, but there are just some cities that are victim to economic forces they can't control, and have no hope of counteracting.

Yeah, there's no good answers for Gary. It's just a shame.

Every country has one city everyone makes fun of.

In Soviet Union, that city is Gary.
