No they are not. Their utility is someone has to fire people. Everything else HR does is just busy work.

I disagree. Anybody can fire people. I've never heard of anybody winning any lawsuit. When the newspaper makes its cuts, people get escorted out of the building by security and that's that.

This is why the bigger papers are the ones losing late deadlines. For the most part, they are the papers that are dumping their on-site presses and having their printing done an hour or two away. Every fucking night. Yay, team!!!

As someone else said, it's crazy to work for the big papers now.
That's where all the most brutal cuts are. And the horrible "managers."

"Help transform newsrooms into digital-first centers."

Haven't they been doing this for the last 12 years or so?

And that Dubow memo from 2006 is a real hoot. Cover the news 24/7. You know, you need a fucking staff and resources for that.

Shit like this is why I ignore as much corporate propaganda as I can.

I will save you reading the link. Same paper print ad revenues were down 17.7%, Same paper circulation revenues were down eight percent. Same paper digital ads were up 3.7%. Same paper total revenues were down 10%.

Bob Dickey said the retailers are buying more inserts in the second quarter and things would get better in the second half.

My advice to anyone working at a Gannett paper. Get out if you can.

I know I am being repetitive, But I don't remember hearing about double digit drops in revenue in the newspaper industry since 2008-2009 until now. My memory is that it was usually single digit drops, Gannett has been a pretty good proxy for the industry because of its size and geographical diversification. New Media aka Gatehouse reports Thursday. If they are down double digits on a same paper basis you know the world is going to hell even more quickly. And casualties will be even heavier.

Good point, guess I should have said this will be the reasoning for this round of layoffs

I work for a smaller chain, have for a while, but our nearest major metro -- the one that used to be a logical step up the career ladder -- is a Gannett paper. Occasionally people will ask why I've been at my shop for so long and (with good intentions) suggest I should be working at the major metro.
    I just laugh at them.
My chain and paper aren't the greatest. A lot of us get worked into the ground for not a lot of money. But at least I'm not worried about losing my job twice a year in the next round of "Survivor: Newsroom."
