Yep, this is what stood out for me from the story:

"A foreman immediately roused 8,000 workers inside the company’s dormitories, according to the executive. Each employee was given a biscuit and a cup of tea, guided to a workstation and within half an hour started a 12-hour shift fitting glass screens into beveled frames. Within 96 hours, the plant was producing over 10,000 iPhones a day."

(At least newspapers give their employees pizza on Election Night. These workers just get a biscuit and a cup of tea).

“We sell iPhones in over a hundred countries,” a current Apple executive said. “We don’t have an obligation to solve America’s problems. Our only obligation is making the best product possible.”

(Yeah, and if Americans can't buy your phones on their minimum wage jobs, you'll be wanting to solve America's problems pretty damn quick)

“We shouldn’t be criticized for using Chinese workers,” a current Apple executive said. “The U.S. has stopped producing people with the skills we need.”

(Oh, you mean like those skills such as working a 72-hour workweek for $17 a day while getting woken up at midnight for a rushjob. Yeah, shame on us).

Apparently, the skill needed is the ability to fit a glass screen into a beveled frame. Would love to hear an explanation of why Americans can't handle that. ::)

What goes unmentioned in article is another benefit of outsourcing is that it reduces head count for Apple. No need to worry about things like health care for the tea drinking Chinese contractors.

Really glad that The Times wrote this story. Maybe people will start to realize that Wall Street is not the only villain to the middle class.

You might even make a case that companies like Apple were even more damaging to the middle class in the past 5 years.

This quote from current Apple executive really infuriates me:

“We sell iPhones in over a hundred countries,” a current Apple executive said. “We don’t have an obligation to solve America’s problems. Our only obligation is making the best product possible.”

Ironic that a good deal of the occupy Wall Street crowd probably owns Apple products.

They do because when you think about it, there's really very little competition for Apple.

If a company did the things Apple does with the same quality, but had most of their jobs in the U.S. with a slight uptick in price, they'd probably would do better as long as they touted they were "Made in the USA". They'd stand out among the crowd.

    What a pole-smoker.

Hope this jackoff dies a horrible, lingering death.

Not until Americans who can't afford things on their low-paying jobs quit buying them anyway.

. . . but has been the basis for the entire American economy since 1900.
