Never ask the doctor or the company. Call your insurance. Every time. Every. Time.

I got burned on the same kind of thing (but not for that large a bill) last year. Just because Cigna or Blue Cross covers it doesn't mean your specific plan. And if the nurse lies to you, no skin off her nose.

Instead of asking her three times, you should have called your insurance provider.

Call the insurance provider. Most of the time, the staff at the private practice or health care facility doesn't know exactly what each insurance provider will cover.

    The insurance companies will.

This far in and nobody has suggested that you upper deck the person who misled you? Man, SportsJournalists.com is slipping.

You save that for the GI specialist, not the orthopaedic practice.

Go back to the nurse and start chucking wrenches at her while screaming, "If you can dodge a wrench, you can answer a question, bitch!"

Hey, Mikey, I've got some hookers in my room. What do you say we go celebrate? My treat.

Go back to the place where you got the brace.

Put it on the receptionist's desk.

    Walk out.

    Start over.

IJAG is right about this. So for the future, it's not the doctor or the surgeon or the secretary or the medical supply company that ultimately determines whether your insurance will pay or not -- it's the insurance company.

    You go to them.

I would fight it out with the insurance company. Couldn't hurt.

Yeah except the insurance company is not the party that is billing me. They told the company they wouldn't pay for it. So they aren't even involved.

The company is billing me despite saying it was free. I guess that's what I get for believing them - in all my other dealings with physical therapists, doctors, dentists, the staff has always gotten things right never misled me. I guess that's what I get. Next time, I'm calling the insurance company.
