McDonalds would have never flourished if this hadn't changed.

    In the early days of Mickey D's, advertising was largely a local responsibility that would typically be shared/pooled by franchisees. IIRC, Ronald McDonald was the "creation" of some of these franchisees. The response to him led, indirectly, to the nationalizing of McDonald's advertising.
