Marijuana playing larger role in fatal crashes

Correlation does not equal causation. I would guess that if you took a sample of any population in Colorado, the incidence of marijuana involvement will have increased since 2009. If we sampled "Drivers who completed a car trip without an accident" between 2009 and 2014 and found an increase in the percentage of them who tested positive for marijuana, would we be suggesting that marijuana has led to better road safety? Like amraeder said, it's a lazy use of statistics, especially if there has been no marked change in overall incidences of traffic accidents.

Also, since the original post cited tax revenue, one would need to determine the impact of said revenue on mortality rate in order to make any sort of value judgment. If that tax revenue is invested in highway improvements that save lives, for example.

The length that stoners will go to in order to discredit anything potentially negative astounds me.

Bet you a barrel of pot that texting is playing a larger role in fatal crashes since 2009.
