Keep it, but instead of making teams who earned their way in through automatic bids play, make the last two at-large teams have to play their way in. I'd much rather watch, say, Virginia Tech and Illinois play than Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Morgan State.

 

Quite right.

The play-in game is really the gateway drug to overexpansion.

But it would be fun to have one play-in for each pod ... if, as joe suggests, "name" teams were in the mix.

 

Illinois does not even deserve to be in a play-in game

 

When the illustrious Great West gets its automatic bid in three years, we'll likely have two play-ins unless the NCAA goes forward with the 96-team bracket.

 

Point taken. It was just an off-the-top-of-the-head example.

 

I always get a laugh out of the grandiose names chosen by some of these backwater leagues. What exactly is big about the Big South?

 

And why does the Great West have a school from New Jersey?

 

Well, it is west of the Hudson.

 

Yeah, those road trips to downtown Newark sure give the conference some class.
