Mallrats

I was just watching Mallrats on Indieplex (as best I can tell it's a Starz channel that we get as part of the package we have). I've seen the movie many times, usually on the VHS copy I bought back in 1998 or so. I've also watched the unwatchable "edited for TV" version that's shown on USA, and I've seen it in the theater, but I've never seen the version that I saw tonight.
There are a lot of scenes and lines that I don't remember in the movie. The opening scene, for instance was at the governor's ball, instead of with TS picking up Brandy to go to Florida.
Has anybody seen this version of it and is it on DVD?

There's a reason the dreck at the governor's ball was cut. Ugh.

It's not a schooner you dumb bastard. It's a sailboat.

Yeah. They've got a lot of scenes that were cut on the DVD in the deleted scenes, go figure. A lot of jokes in the movie refer back to that scene, so when you go back and watch it, Mallrats becomes a little funnier. I just spent the last week watching the commentary as I fell asleep.

There's also a lot more to the first scene with T.S. and Brandy, too.

A couple, actually. It was way too drawn out, and it wasn't that funny.

Call me Donnie, call me Joey...

Still the most out-of-nowhere laugh I've ever had watching a movie.

I liked when Ethan Suplee called Shannon Doherty "Brenda."

The funny thing about that line is that Doherty knew it was coming, but Suplee didn't. So when she hit him, he thought she was really pissed at him.

  11. Ha. Love that movie- actually knew Jason Lee before he did that movie, but that's a whole other story.

As for the opening scene- I believe Kevin Smith says somewhere on the DVD that he cut the governors ball scene- not because it didn't have its moments of hiliarity- but because its inclusion in the movie meant that it was 30 minutes before the characters actually got to the mall... and the movie is called Mall Rats...

Anyway. They cut that scene, but still have a few references to the scene left in the edited version of the film.... such as at the beginning when TS shows up at Brandi's house and she says something along of the lines of "He's really pissed at you after last night."

And then the scene on the game show set when Mr. Svenning's supervisors tell him that "If this game show ends up being another incident like the one at the governor's mansion, you'll be doing the lottery on public access."

So yea- the scene was cut, but the references to it stayed in the film. Weird how that works- and interesting how those comments make sense when you see the director's cut.

    Great move, though.

I watched the deleted scene last night, and it does tie the rest of the movie a little tighter together. But if you watch the commentary on the disc, Smith mentions that it was "20 boring minutes" of an intro.
