Madam says she supplied hookers to Louisville basketball recruits

It's the perpetual conundrum for punishing college teams. Do you vacate wins/titles or do you take away scholarships and put in a postseason/tournament ban? One has no affect on the people who perpetrated the rules violation because they're long gone. The other punishes people who had nothing to do with the violations and the people involved are long gone. There's no good way to do it because it takes so long for allegations to come to light and be fully vetted. The whole thing is a joke.

While the above is on point, my guess is that the Louisville fans are going apeshit over that banner being pulled down. Remember when the NCAA pulled a bunch of JoePa's wins and how the PSU fans reacted? It may not do any lasting good, depending on whether the NCAA sticks to its guns or not, but it is going to be a black eye for the coaches and the fans are going to be pissed with the athletic dept. too. Oh, they'll blame the NCAA, but the bottom line is that Louisville supplied hookers to recruit kids. The coaches involved no longer get to claim that championship on their resume, and anyone who considers hiring them is going to be giving them the side eye, asking very pointed questions and perhaps adding contract riders.

I think that's better than screwing over a team of kids who were not even being recruited yet when it happened.

I don't think they were banned from TV.

They just didn't get a non-conference schedule, IIRC.

That's why coaches should be the ones punished. Can they be fined by the NCAA? Can the school be made to curb their salaries or pay in some way? Bc they are usually the only ones who are there long term.

What if you're Pete Carroll who benefits from Reggie Bush and his shenanigans off the field but then bolts to the NFL before the NCAA comes knocking on the door? Guys like Pitino and Williams who aren't leaving for the NBA probably can more easily be punished, but there is always that out for those who want to game the system, get noticed and leave before the bill comes due.

Yeah no perfect system but hurting the coach the most still seems like the best deterrent to endemic cheating or a culture of shithead

Considering how 90 percent of the the problems the NCAA deals with have to do with recruiting - they should really do something like having an NCAA rep supervise all recruit visits, or require a full audit of a recruiting budget for three years. Vacating wins or titles doesn't do anything - putting a team on probation punishes players who weren't involved.
