One heck of an obit in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel today.

So I can only wonder: Was this guy the model for Hawkeye? Trapper? B.J.?

I guess B.J. really wasn't in the book or movie, but the obit does say this guy was in Korea when his daughter was born and he missed the first year of her life.

Also, go to the photo gallery. There are 14 pretty fascinating pics.

Very cool read, particularly on Veterans/Armistice/Rememberance Day.

My dad had an experience a lot like that with me. It was a couple of years after the truce in Korea, but Cold War tensions were still high. My father was a Navy pilot and was scheduled to ship out to Keflavik, Iceland around the time I was born. He got to stay long enough to see me enter the world, then he left and didn't come home for almost a year. To this day, I don't quite have the same intimate bond with him that I have with my mother.
