One of my friends interned at one of the NY papers and he and I were covering a game at the Garden and he pokes me and says, "Watch this..."
He leans over to this longtime NYC writer and says, "Hey, tell my buddy here what you think of Mike Lupica."

As if on cue, the writer says very loudly, "I hope he fucking dies and I hope it's fucking painful."

You can't help how you feel; I understand the whole deal.

I wonder how loudly Lupica is going to complain that he's being shredded on an ESPN-sponsored site.

Could "The National" be recreated in digital format or print? With digital, you wouldn't have to worry about two of the big things they had to -- production and distribution. Marketing would probably be easier now than back then.

Interestingly, he was a guest on a Simmons podcast a few weeks ago and Simmons has often talked about how Lupica's book with Goldman, Wati Till Next Year, is one of his favorites. Not sure he'd go on a podcast again after this story.
