    JOB TITLE: High school sports editor

    The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s high school sports editor is responsible for organizing and carrying out valuable, unique, compelling, timely content appearing on all our varied platforms to cover the dozens of high schools in our market.

    WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

    STRONG JOURNALIST: Ability to cover beat, report and write high-quality stories and columns. Knows AP style and other language usage.

    LEADERSHIP: Leads by example, motivates staff to stretch beyond their expectations, comes up with and executes ways to improve all our products. Must clear path for direct report whenever possible and also understands how to lead when we don’t get everything we want internally or externally. The high school sports editor will fill in for sports editor when he/she is out.

    I thought I would elaborate there. We are looking at this a couple of different ways. But, we are just looking for the best fit. This could be a standard HS reporter position (a solid recent grad) or it could be for HS sports editor (2-3 years of experience or more or maybe a Masters).

    The basics of the job are:

    Focusing on enterprise and feature stories
    Moderate amount of HS game coverage
    Coordinating the game coverage with the rest of the staff
    Writing weekly player of the weeks
    Coordinate stringers for game coverage
