The Courier and Daily Comet, sister papers in Houma and Thibodaux, La., are seeking a sports reporter to cover local high school sports, and some Division I college sports, in Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes, a Cajun community about an hour southwest of New Orleans.

We're looking for someone with a strong nose for covering sports, healthy curiosity and the diligence it takes to write stories that go beyond the superficial. We’re looking for someone with a strong desire to write fun and interesting stories about local athletes and coaches quickly, accurately and authoritatively. The ideal candidate will think critically on the fly, consider no assignment too big or small and be unafraid to ask probing questions. You'll work flexible hours dictated often by sports events and our need to respond quickly and effectively. You will also share the sports beat covering Nicholls State University, a college with an NCAA Division I sports program located in Thibodaux.

Our reporters work in multiple media, including video, print and online. Dexterity in all of these, as well as with common word-processing, spreadsheet, database and video-editing systems, is preferred. A four-year college degree is required. Previous experience at a daily newspaper or other professional news organization is preferred but not necessary.

You'll deliver news to readers of The Courier and Daily Comet, sister papers in Houma and Thibodaux, La., with a combined daily circulation of about 16,000. Our papers consistently earn major journalism awards, and The Courier has been named Louisiana Press Association Newspaper of the Year for most of the past decade. Live and work a unique, fun and colorful community with Cajun roots, lots of festivals and some of the best freshwater and saltwater fishing in the world. An hour’s drive will take you to New Orleans and all of the pro sports, fantastic food and world-class entertainment for which the city is famous.

Both papers are owned by Gatehouse Media. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package and opportunities for professional growth.

To apply, send your resume and at least five writing samples to Executive Editor Keith Magill at keith.magill@houmatoday.com and Sports Editor Kelly James McElroy at kelly.mcelroy@houmatoday.com.
