In the NBA preview section, by Jack McCallum: "The Golden State Warriors chose wisely when they made 6'11" Chris Washburn the third pick of the draft. Provided he improves in the citizenship department, Washburn will be better than either Bedford or Cleveland's Brad Daugherty."

He's great period, but he was especially so in that game and in that last half-inning, recounting how the Mets had screwed up the two-on, nobody-out situation and managed not to score in the bottom of the ninth. And then the build-up as the Mets rallied in the 10th. What I always love when I see that last half-inning replayed is the sound of disbelief in his voice when Stanley throws the wild pitch and he realizes the Mets are tying the game. Listen to the way he says "here comes Mitchell to score the tying run, and Ray Knight is at second base."

As a die-hard Bosox fan, that's why when people say Buckner I say "whatever."

It was never Buckner's fault, it was Bob Freakin' Stanley, you throw a wild pitch to allow the tying run to score and the go ahead runner to go to 2nd? Why he never got the brunt of the grief, I will never understand.

I wish Buckner the best, he was a great hitter.

The guy I accuse first is Rich Gedman. If his fat ass had any mobility left, he would've blocked Stanley's pitch - it wasn't THAT wild.
He became a free agent after that season, found no interest (IIRC, not even for the three-year, $1 million standard collusion offer) and came back to Boston with his tail 'tween his legs. He was done by that point.
