Little Orphan Annie was a militant Republican. Who knew?

. . . and if anyone was giving Annie/Daddy real trouble, Daddy would
have The Asp "take care of him"/"send him on a long journey".

She was a cheerful little earful, though.

The vacant eyeballs were a dead giveaway.

Be sure to drink your Ovaltine. Ovaltine? A crummy commercial? Son of a bitch!

My favorite phrases from this thread so far are:

Cheerful earful -- never heard that one before. Like it. Need to find a reason to use it.

Militant Republican, grotesquely hard-right, & wild-eyed hard-right -- As if being a Republican or on the right is a bad thing. Would love to see the list of Militant Democrats, people who are grotesquely hard-left, and/or newspapers that are wild-eyed hard-left.

The Tribune during Col. McCormick's heydey was a real piece of work.

    Oh, I'm sure it was.

But lots of papers were. Many were basically house organs for the local political parties.

The Trib basically took the side of big business. But, back in the day there were plenty of smaller socialist/workers dailies printed here as well.

Many? How about most? And that's why I roll my eyes whenever people talk about how great journalism was back in the old days.

Before '08, the Trib had NEVER, EVER endorsed a Democrat for POTUS.
An amazing record, encompassing more than a century of nose-holding
    and sword-swallowing.

I almost said most and went on, but decided to keep it short.

There's a reason many newspapers still have the word Republican or Democrat in their name.

The political cartoons and articles of the past were insane.

All true. Of course I think the bigger crime is the endorsement of a Democrat in 2008.

The Col. must have been spinning in his grave,

Oh, and the Times is at over 50 straight years of endorsing Democrats for President -- a streak I can't imagine being broken any time soon.

Ike in '56 was the last one they endorsed.

I mean, for Heaven's sake, they endorsed Carter for re-election in '80 and then Mondale in '84.
