If she found that offensive she'd really hate some that I've used.

In one of my old jobs, the edict came down that the anchors were not to use the term "dinger."

Several years ago, when one of our high school baseball teams (the Highlanders) won the state championship in baseball, I ran a banner headline (thanks to the suggestion of my dad, Rallen13) that said:

    Highlanders Kilt 'Em

And we actually got complaints. 1) What did it actually mean? and 2) A belief that I was using a word too close to kill.

I once fielded a call from a reader who was irate that we used the term "kill" in a prep volleyball story. He pointed out that our troops are dying in Iraq and screamed that it was insensitive for us to use that term.
I didn't ask for his opinion on using the word "blitz" in football stories.

I get offended every time I read a basketball story and see the term "shot."

The use of the word "ball" makes me uncomfortable.

Pitcher and catcher should go too. As should tight end.

What do you have against a tight end?

I draw the line at "Trojans pound Beavers"

Best headline ever was in the Boston Globe about 10 years ago, following a Bruins-Sabres game:

"Any way you measure it, Buffalo's Peca is big"

I think the dude lost his job. I would have given him a promotion.

at my college paper, someone clipped out a headline, i think from the fresno bee (but maybe not) on an interview with a legendary basketball coach:

    "A morning with Wooden."

It was up on our wall for years.

Our newsside people got a lot of shit when John Wayne died from cancer and the banner head was: Big C licks Duke
The shit they got was deserved.
