"Lick" as an offensive term, you're (kidding) me

I had to slot the other night. Ran front-page centerpiece on Giants-A's game. Ran a picture of Bonds sticking his tongue out, kind of playfully. Headline was "Giants lick Oakland."

Yeah, I know, I was inspired that night.

Anyway, some lady tore off the front page, sent it to the editor with a note saying she was cancelling her subscription because the Sports department was "disgusting." Christ almighty.

Whats the most ridiculous gripe you've heard recently?

Well there was this one angry group of whiners who complained about the phrase "shuck and jive"........

And I remember this other group of overly-sensitive types who demanded a radio guy get fired for saying "nappy headed ho's"........

And currently there is this one group of bed wetters who are all up in arms because another radio guy used the term negro in reference to a Democratic Presidential candidate.

    Is that what you mean?

I hope your editor gave that lady a tongue lashing. I'm sure that's what she needed.

    Ace, was that tongue-in-cheek?

Years ago, one of our reporters referred to a local team that was having a remarkable playoff run as "Hickory High," an obvious reference to Hoosiers.
We got a complaint from a reader in that town asking why we were so clearly calling them hicks.

So is it safe to assume she licked the envelope?

And I'm assuming this is out in the SanFran area.

While I'm assuming you didn't write it with a dirty intention, the reader read it with one. I have to ask, how is that the paper's fault?

On the obvious movie reference scale, with Bad News Bears being a 10 and a reference to the type of cycle used in Breaking Away a 1, I'd give that a 5.

Reminds of the great bumper sticker that used to be on many cars of University of South Carolina fans:

    "You can't lick our Cocks."

because papers are supposed to anticipate reader's politically incorrect concerns
