    Why are you worrying about libel? Instead worry about credibility.
     
  2. Right on, Inky. This is your newspaper's tacit stamp of approval that the facts are correct.

    When the editorial staff calls to confirm authorship (they do call, don't they?), tell the writer it's not going to run as is, unless the writer wants to correct it. If not, spike it.

    Or just spike it without calling. Readers have no inherent right to be published. We don't publish every letter, just because of available space.

    The question of libel was more curiosity than anything else. A co-worker who has a blog on our Web site brought this up and linked to the two editorial guys' e-mail addresses.
