If it's a pity party we're having between these two clubs, I win. No pity tonight, though. Royals win.

The Giants are 10 games under .500 and five games out of first place.

The Dodgers have scored three runs in three games.

    NL West! Fuck yeah!

That's exactly what I thought. Not just a win, but winning at a place Kansas City has never played well at, and to do it down 5-1, down to the last strike, was huge.

Seven scoreless innings by the KC pen.

    Nah.

I can walk in at 9:59 am and still be the first one on line. :D

I'm with you guys (big surprise, I know). Almost turned off the game tonight but decided to stick with it once I realized there was nothing else on. I'm glad I didn't make the mistake.

Seven games under .500 and 9.5 games out ... but yes, I do agree with doubledown here. Given that the Royals have gone into some epic slumps this decade:

8-plus game losing streaks since 2002
    1. Kansas City, 11
    2. Baltimore, 10
    3. Colorado, 9
    3. Detroit, 9 (six of those in 2003)
    5. Tampa 8

8-plus game losing streaks since 2004
    1. Kansas City, 9
    2. Colorado, 6
    2. Tampa, 6
    4. Baltimore, 5
    5. Pittsburgh, 4

Now take into account that the Royals had just lost two straight to the Cardinals before going to Camden Yards, where they had lost something like seven straight against a team that's owned them this season. So to a Royals fan, a series in Baltimore would inevitably end with the Royals carrying a six-game losing streak before going to Tampa Bay, where the streak would have grown to 10.

When the Royals finally come home again, they get the White Sox. It would be nice for the Royals to be close enough in the standings for that series to be relevant. Losing 10 straight going into that series would not be a way to do that, obviously.

Anything that stops even so much as a remote chance to lose 10 or 12 games straight, yeah, that's a big win for the Royals.
