Barkley won in 1993, his best season. Voters have ALWAYS gone for a one-off MVP reward for Hall of Fame players who were not, at the time, the league's best player. Oscar Robertson won one in the early '60s to break up the Russell-Wilt duopoly. Don't tell me Oscar wasn't an MVP-caliber player year in and year out. He was. But he wasn't as V as two historically dominant centers, because the nature of the game makes a great center intrinsically more valuable. Interestingly, Kareem piled up some MVP awards when many fans and writers were saying he was a bum -- the Airplane period.

No problem here with James winning it. Can't imagine voting for anyone else this season. But there is only one Michael Jordan.
