    Of course, both the conventional manual and the planetary gear automatic are on the endangered species list. The automated dual-clutch manual transmission will offer the best of both worlds: sequential manual shifting for the gearheads and the full automatic work of a planetary gear automatic all with better fuel economy than either of its forbears. Volkswagen and Ferrari have them all over their lines and the U.S. automakers are working on them too.

    But I'll miss that clutch pedal, heel-to-toe downshifts and having a tachometer that really serves a purpose.

    Gotta have the paddle shifters on the Ferrari. Anything less is Bourgois.
