Only unexpected in the precise timing. I knew there was a window in which the current guy might leave to rejoin his family in another part of the state. They moved before school started and that sorta set the clock ticking.

I actually figured this might come to a head in October, so I didn't miss by a lot.

On the other hand, I couldn't promise anybody else anything so I had to wait until something actually happened. It's awful to float possibilities to other people and have those fizzle.

There's never a good time to make a big desk change, so you just sorta have to jump in with both feet when you do.

Yeah, this is a good paper. If I was 10 years younger, I'd be all over this. Know a lot of the guys up there and it's a quality group.

I spent a few days in Tupelo this summer visiting relatives (lots of family in the area), and the content is excellent, but one thing I did notice was the print quality wasn't the best. In particular, the color process was just a little off. I would imagine a new press would probably solve a lot of those issues.

Lord, let's hope so. That was the underpinning notion behind buying a new press -- the old one just couldn't be coaxed into any kind of consistency on color. We have high, and possibly unreasonable, hopes in that area.

    Ajax.

I'll take care of it, it's only a couple blocks up from my current shop.

I'm giving a live-fire audition to someone who responded here. He's off to a decent start.

I apologize for not giving a more formal update here just a bit sooner. We have hired someone based on this SJ thread. Jeff Roper from Mobile has joined our merry band. He's off to a good start.

While we have filled our job, there's now an opening here for a copy desk chief. Good gig, with serious responsibilities over a good crew, for someone who's so inclined.

I'll answer questions here or you can ping me at john.pitts@journalinc.com
