    Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere (too lazy to try to look it up) ... here's a map someone has done documenting newspaper layoffs this year.

    4,500 in less than seven months ... damn.

    More than double last year's total and a helluva lot more thumbtacks on the 2008 map.

    Better economy too. Circulation is creeping downward, but advertising is still fairly solid — at least relative to the two coasts, I would imagine.

    Apparently, the numbers are going to be so bad this year that the managers are going to purge staff before the end of the year so when the corporate types come calling in early 2009 they can assure them that they're already on top of things and things will be better in 2009.

    What an awful business.
