I fit firmly into the mid-40, mid roller crowd, but we also LOVE the South Point. Sort of what the Orleans used to be.....before Michael Gaughan split & Boyd Gaming turned it into "Stardust Lite." Now Gaughan has the SP, and it's a true hidden gem. Hard to stay there without a car, though.....unless you're prepared to just "dig in" and stay/play there.

Even if you don't stay downtown, though, there's not a lot better than a day of low-rolling around Fremont Street. We'll usually spend a night or two at the Nugget (before moving to the South Point), but that can get a bit pricey (room-wise).

How much is the South Point? You can stay at the Nugget for something like $80 a night.

I have an entire shelf of Stardust stuff, since we stayed there just a few months before it was shuttered. I've got postcards, ashtrays, chips, decks of cards, room keys, a security badge, some cups and pens and two or three "Privacy Please" doorknob hangers.

The Riv is, well, The Riv.
Nothing special. Could do better just off, or downtown.

Not sure what the rack rate at the SP is, I haven't paid it in a while. Even at our (very) moderate level of play, we get free, reduced and 2 for 1 (reduced rate) offers, pretty consistently. My guess-timate would be that it would run in the same range as the Monte Carlo, for the first stay. The discounts and comps started up, right after our initial stay. It's been our "home" for our last 6 trips. Pretty decent sports book, as well. Plus, they have Fat Tire in bottles at the tables. BIG plus (IMHO), for those of us a "Fat Tire Free" zone of the country.

We tend to stay at the Nugget on weekend, and spread our play all over Fremont Street (4 Queens and Main Street Station both hold a spot in my Vegas heart...), so we tend to pay more of a premium to stay at the GN.

I've stayed at ElCo three times. Their tower rooms are very spacious, only drawback is the small bathroom. "Vintage" rooms are only accessible by stairs from the casino and all the smoke wafts up there, so those are only for insomniac diehards.

As someone else said, the casino definitely has its share of characters. I wouldn't want to be a pit boss there and have to handle all that riffraff. And the dealers are mostly at the bottom of the dealer food chain, working their first jobs. Gambling is terrific though. Single and double deck blackjack (3-2), 10x odds on dice, not too many of the other goofy games. Sports book isn't huge, but it's good.

Also one of the easiest spots in town to score free rooms and food (after my first trip I never paid for anything again, and I'm not a high roller). Coffee shop isn't great but the steakhouse is decent.

I'm planning one night on Freemont Street so maybe I'll do a little gambling there.

Eighty-something owner Jackie Gaughan occasionally walks the casino floor at El Cortez, he lives on the top floor of the tower. Saw him on my last trip out there and said to the pit boss "it's good to see he still gets around," to which the pit boss said "Jackie doesn't know where the fuck he is."

    Gotta love gallows casino humor.

While you're all dispensing advice, what about Excaliubr?

Going next month w/some friends and they booked rooms in this hotel. I've only been to Vegas once and stayed at Harrah's.

What should I watch out for?
